The trick to accessing the shop at the right moment and having enough gear to purchase the item is to return to the Hideout. You can reach the Hideout when the autosave button pops up at the bottom-right corner of the screen. This also enables you to use the Streamer Mode toggle through which you can return to your last checkpoint.
