When destroying enemies, the shiny floating medallions (medals) provide a boost to your score. Rather than fly around trying to collect them, simply stop shooting! By letting go of the Shoot button, medals that are not stationary will be attracted directly to your ship. Beware, not shooting can lead to damage so make sure you only do this when it's safe.
