Loot is the name of the game. However, it’s not always in your best interest to go and grab it. Focus on clearing out enemy encounters before spending your time picking up all the shiny loot left on the battlefield. There are exceptions, such as if you’re running low on ammo or you really need to recover health. But for the most part, wait until it’s safe to collect loot and open containers.
