Once you get to the slums, NPCs will start giving you side quests. They give you a good amount of resources most of the time and they can be really simple like a small number of fruits or veggies, or kill some rats. You can opt in to multiple side quests at a time and just continue the story and you will probably clear some side missions on the way.
