At any one moment on your island, a villager is either cooking or building something in their home. If you find and try to talk to the villager when they are working, they will tell you what they are building and give you a DIY recipe of whatever it is that they are making. Once you get given the DIY, after 3-hours, another villager will begin crafting a completely different recipe.
