This game does not have a traditional upgrade path. Instead of skill points, upgrades are given as rewards upon completing side missions. On the map, icons resembling the heads of your heroes usually appear in the region they are from after quests. Fulfill requirements of these side missions to get a new upgrade. These quests can be viewed by pressing R and tabbing to the Quests list.
