If you come across any quests or tasks that require you to do something at night, don't wait for it to happen. Under the mini-map to the top left is a time of day indicator. Just like a normal clock, it works clockwise and the small arrow moves as the time of day progresses. You'll know when night is approaching as bar fills and the icon changes to a moon.
