The two of the most used abilities in-game are ignifer and extinguis. While ignifer works amazing against enemies like rats, it is not that helpful against guards. You can use extinguis to extinguish the light source of guards and let the rats take out the guards for you. Use these abilities tactically and you should be good to go.
