To destroy yellow-orange barriers (energy shields) you need an Artifact called the Blade Balancer. What this does is enables a more powerful melee attack. This Artifact is sometimes available in the Fabricator room of each Biome. Keep in mind that its appearance is random so it may not be available on every cycle. You can also destroy orange shields by shooting Doombringer Alt-Fire on barriers.
