Always be within a few steps of a wall of ground that you can use to open a portal. The entire game hinges on this mechanic, so not being able to portal means you are removing a powerful tool from your arsenal, which puts you at a massive disadvantage. You don't have to camp near portal walls and floors, but just make sure that you are by one in case you get jumped while moving along.
