The combat in general is a little slow and stiff compared to similar games and backing off to reset for timing is an excellent idea. Your ammo for your bow and gun should be used when appropriate against lower enemies of course but otherwise try to save your ammo for the boss as it will absolutely come in handy to get some free ranged damage.
