Sometimes a crowd of bad guys can overwhelm you. Especially if they are surrounding you. You should try to position so that the enemies are only on one side of you and that way you can fight them one by one rather than multiple enemies at a time. In chapter three you can find a move that lets you swap positions with an enemy after parrying and it's very helpful to do this.
