It might not be obvious when first playing, but in order to leave a mission and return to the map, you need to use the Divine Branch Fragment. This is a usable item in your inventory. Note that you can't take any Amrita earned when quitting a mission. In order to keep all Amrita, use a Divine Branch instead.
