A little into the game you will be able to choose to synthesize with Sophie or Plachta. They have many items in common but have their own unique recipes as well. Try to keep them both even in alchemy level and it will pay off later when you have a recipe that only one can make and both will already have enough alchemy levels to complete the recipe.
