In the early game, it might be motivating just to upgrade your ship as much as possible and as quickly as possible. The truth is that on your first playthrough, you don't fully understand your playstyle. You also don't know what weapons and upgrades might be better than the ones you have available now. Money is not easy to come by, so spend most of it upgrading health and shields at first.
