A Rainbow Stone can be dropped to gauge the distance of a fall. Craft these with Ruin Fragments. To know if you'll take damage when falling, add to your Pouch or use directly from the Inventory. Listen as the stone drops, if the pitch is high and shatters when it lands, your fall can result in death. If the stone falls and remains glowing on the ground, you can fall without dying.
