By accessing the World Map you can view the remaining points of interest in an area. Press the World Map shortcut or select World from the Main Menu. On the World Map press the Sector Info button (view image). This will reveal various items, objects, and structures that you have discovered, along with a percentage of the area explored. Use this to keep track of things undiscovered.
