If your Inventory becomes full while out in the field during battle, you're still able to pick up dropped items. Go to Central City and access one of the Storage kiosks near the main entrance. From the Storage Menu select Open Storage and then view Drop Storage. Lost items are picked up beyond your character's Inventory limit are held there temporarily.
