You should really only use the surf ability (hold LT on Xbox) when you're going downhill. The amount of speed you gain for traveling makes a huge difference. Unfortunately, using it to traverse hills is not worth it at all. Instead, don't even surf up hills and slopes. Use the dash ability and spam it while walking uphill to cover more ground. It's faster this way.
