Use the filters menu in your map to narrow down the types of races you are looking to do in your current play session. When you begin expanding, you unlock tons of areas and races. This tends to turn the map into a hot mess. If you aren't prepared to slow down with the expansion, simply access the filter menu to choose the types of races you're in the mood for.
