When you hire a Mercenary, they usually don't survive long in the heat of battle. This is because they do not have any Armor or Weapons equipped. From the menu, go to the Mercenary tab. Fill the empty gear slots with Weapons and Armor. You'll notice right away their survivability is improved depending on the quality of gear you give them. Be aware this gear is lost if you hire a new Mercenary.
