In battle, if you keep your characters closer to each other, rather than distanced, you will be able to defend them more easily. The exception is when you are fighting enemies with splash damage. There you want to spread out a little to not get everyone hit by those attacks, but still keep them kind of together and the closer you do, the better you can use them to support each other.
