The AR and pistol that you start every match with are pretty good in most situations. The pistol can even get kills at ranges longer than some midrange weapons. However, sticking to the basics will give you more dual wins. The 1-2 combo (spray the shield off, then switch to pistol for clean up) will be more rewarding than searching the grounds for your favorite weapon.
