If you find yourself in the middle of a constant stream of llamas, it's easy to run out of ammo and get surrounded. Make it a habit to conserve ammo and only shoot when there are llamas around. If you have a moment where there's distance between you and and a mob, reload even if you still have ammo. This will provide a consistent stream of fire and you won't get stuck reloading as often.
