Technically, that isn't true. The game manual art you pick up gives obscure hints about the items in the game. However, the only way to know FOR SURE how something works is to equip it and use it. Don't feel bad about wasting it because more items come as you progress. Even hidden merchants will sell you those items you thought you'd never see again.
