Unlike red laser beams and rings, when attempting to dash through purple ones, you take damage. This is especially true during boss battles where you could easily die by not paying attention to the color of their attacks. In general, any hostile attack or environmental trap that's colored purple needs to be handled with caution, you're not invulnerable when dashing.
