If you miss something someone says, especially important plot points, you can check the chat log during the non cinematic conversations. The button you need to press differs on each system but it will list the button you need to bring up the chat log just to the right of where the text boxes appear. You can also fast forward the text appearing if you prefer to read faster than they speak.
