Once you come across a major boss, there is usually a Summoning Pool nearby. Rather than go in unprepared, consider learning the boss’ patterns first. In the Multiplayer menu use the Tarnished’s Furled Finger to place a gold summon sign so that other players can allow you to join against the boss. This way you’ll get experience in the fight and if you lose you still retain your Runes.
