Sometimes you'll be penalized for falling and your runes can get left on a place you can't escape. You might be stuck on a cliff, platform, or high ledge and will ultimately die due to fall damage. Always check your Map to see if you can fast travel! As long as there aren't enemies around or you're in a dungeon without first activating a site of grace, you can safely leave.
