There are multiple Special Stages and branching paths that you can take which unlock in Stage & Score Attack mode. You must play the entire game (Start Game) from beginning to end at any difficulty. Once you reach the end of Stage 5, destroy the beetle-shaped ship. It deploys different colored pods. Each pod represents a path and by picking up each one you can unlock all stages and paths.
