The merchant is a great resource for buying shards, but he is also the only place you can buy the orb of return and the respec coins. The orb of return is something you should have at least 1 of on you at all time in case you are lost with no rest in site. And the respec coin can be used if you want to reallocate your stat points for a new character build.
