Warhammers are great weapons for damage, however, they're extremely slow and lumbering. Consider doing the following to attack quickly with this weapon type: First Evade and then immediately use the Light Attack. Not only is this the fastest way to get in an attack, it also produces a sweeping motion that can hit multiple enemies at once.
